Billy Blaze, eight year-old genius, working diligently in his backyard clubhouse has created an interstellar starship from old soup cans, rubber cement and plastic tubing. While his folks are out on the town and the babysitter has fallen asleep, Billy travels into his backyard workshop, dons his brother's football helmet, and transforms into...
COMMANDER KEEN--defender of Earth!
In his ship, the Bean-with-Bacon Megarocket, Keen dispenses galactic justice with an iron hand!
Good morning!
It is
2008-11-21, 01:20:32 (@055), Friday, week 47.
I remember having bought a Gravis PC
GamePad
,
the original gamepad for the PC, so I could play games like my friends with
"Nintendos"
did.
They put a yellow icon of a little, helmeted guy on the packaging; a game was included.
I installed the game, plugged in my brand new gamepad, and got pleasantly surprised by an actually scrolling platform game on the
PC, another first.
My little sister sat next to me the entire time, and together we finished the game the same evening. She played through the red, labyrinthine city on the East side of Mars, as I couldn't finish it at the time. I don't think we got to the secret level that first time we played.
Soon enough I got to play the other Keen games, and the later series were even better than the first. Many birthdays after that, Keen 4 kept our younger guests busy, though often fighting ensued over who would get to play the next level. Nobody can deny Commander Keen is a classic series of games, which helped introduce the masses to the concept of shareware.
Glen Rhodes remade Marooned on Mars in Flash so you can play it online
using the cursor keys.
There is no sound, no world map (meaning you have to play the levels in a set order), you can't save, and there are some other bugs,
but in general the game is almost identical.

First of all, in order to make controlling the games easier, I suggest using a gamepad to control Keen more easily.
If you have an older DOS or Windows ME/95/98 system, I suggest using the Gravis
PC GamePad.
On a more recent Windows XP/Vista system you'll probably want something a little bit more advanced
so you can use it for other games as well.
I personally use a Logitech Rumblepad 2, which is basically a
PlayStation 2 controller.
Do NOT get the Logitech Dual Action Gamepad, as many people experience problems with it; check
Google!
Microsoft's Xbox 360
controller is a good choice as well.
The Commander Keen series was made to run under DOS, and therefore more recent OSs have difficulties running it properly. Windows 95 and 98 should work properly, but Windows 2000 and XP probably won't give you any sound. Of course there are also other non-Microsoft OSs you might want to run Keen on. Your best bet is to use DOSBox, a very good DOS emulator. Here is a step by step tutorial on getting the games to work under Windows 2000 or XP.
I assume you already have your game ready; otherwise download the episode of your choice from the Games section.
First of all, visit DOSBox' Download area.
Look for Windows, and download the latest Win32 installer.
(In some cases older versions work better for some games, so you may also want to try out some of those.)
Now you can use DOSBox' own, more detailed explanation in their FAQ, or read on for my attempt.
For more links with information on DOSBox, see Links → Tools
After you install, you should have 4 shortcuts in your Start menu, including DOSBox and DOSBox.conf. The former is the main programme, the latter is a text file you can edit to change the different settings. Keen should run without any optimizing, so don't touch the .conf for now.
Once you run the programme, and you should see 2 screens. The first gives you info about the .conf file in use, info on sound devices, joysticks if available, that kind of thing. It looks similar to this:
The other screen is the main DOS emulation screen you will use, featuring a colourful block with some information,
and a Z:\>_ prompt at the end.
It looks similar to this:
At this moment DOSBox is limited to this internal virtual Z drive, and can't access anything on your real drives. In order to allow this, you need to mount an actual directory on one of your drives (it can't be the whole drives) to another virtual drive. ("Directory" is simply another word for "folder".) You can create extra virtual drives for every letter of the alphabet (minus Z). I will assume your games are installed on your C drive in a directory called Games, in other words: C:\Games\, and you want to be able to access all games through 1 virtual drive, C:.
Type: mount c: c:\games to accomplish this.
If you want to create a second virtual drive just for your Keen games, you could type: mount d: c:\games\keen
After that you can type: c: to go to your new, virtual C:, which will show a C:\>_ prompt on screen.
Enter any subdirectory by typing for instance: cd games, or cd games\keen, depending on your exact mount.
Now type a command like: keen4e to start the game.
If you are unsure about the command to type / file to start, type: dir *.exe, which shows all executable files.
You can also go back a directory: cd .., go back to the root: cd\, or quit DOSBox: exit.
I'll some information on how to have mounts automatically created, and/or create a quick and easy way to start different games.

Commander Keen.
In order for the world to get another (proper) Keen game, it's pretty much necessary Tom Hall gets the right to the Keen IP.
Joe Siegler commented on the not uncommon idea about fans raising enough money to buy Tom the rights from id Software, stating money isn't the problem in this post. This means it is currently very unlikely there will be another Keen game (id Software isn't planning on making any either).
Other games by id Software and Apogee have been released as freeware, so it's very possible eventually the Keen games will undergo the same fate. Of course the rights to Keen Dreams lie with Softdisk, and Keen 6 was distributed by FormGen, now Atari, which complicates things for those games.
Around 2005-10 John Carmack was interviewed on X-Play, about Quake 4 and the Doom movie among other things. He mentioned id Software isn't planning on making another Keen game, stating the Doom marine killed him in Doom II. He does want to release the source code, but nobody knows of any remaining copies, and it might very well be lost.
These are the credits of id Software as they appear at the time of the Keen games,
when they called themselves Id Software.

Some of the characters in the Commander Keen series have look-alikes, although I admit some of them are a bit far-fetched.
Keen 1's maps don't have official names, so the following table only shows power-ups, statues, and some other info.
Technically Keen only has to retrieve his 4 missing ship parts, and exit their containing levels to finish the game.

The following table shows the designations as seen on the ship's hull (map level).
I added possible meanings in the case of acronyms.
There are 8 Tantalus Rays that need to be destroyed to finish the game.
The table shows the names of the Tantalus Rays as they are written on the signs in their respective levels.
The Moscow and Rome Tantalus Ray images were accidently switched.

The Standard Galactic Alphabet
is a simple substitution cipher invented by Tom Hall.
To make the Exit signs in the Keen games look alien he changed the letters a bit.
He ended up completing the set of 26 letters, and other signs were added.
The following images show the SGA as it appears in Keen 3 (Secret Level) and Keen 6 (Blooglab Space Station) respectively.
There are 4 SGA TTF fonts you can download that I know off, some of which can coexist due to their different names.

In this section over time I'll add information useful for editing the Keen games.
Keen is 1.4 (32/23) × as high in the later games as he is in the original trilogy, meaning everything else depicted is also scaled by that amount.
The Keen games were written for EGA which can show 16 different colours
(out of a 64 colour palette).
The colours used in Keen differ slightly from the default EGA palette, and olive was exchanged for brown,
but they are in the default order.
Despite the difference and with the exception of brown, I used a default naming convention for ease of use.
The 4th column shows the game code, decimal values ranging from 00 - 63 (multiply by 4 for regular decimal values),
for each of the RGB channels.
Adurdin made a palette changing patch for K1 which you can read about here.

The games have horizontal floors (1:0), slopes angled 45° (1:1) and 22.5° (1:2), and vertical walls (0:∞).
Despite appearances, KD456 uses the same 2D tile system as K123 with the addition of sloped floors and ceilings. Horizontal floors (both regular and jump-down-through) consist of 2 rows of tiles. Keen stands right on top of the bottom one, whereas the top one is basically only background detail. The tilted effect is achieved through lines angled 67.5° (2:1)
The following tiles blueprint, for which I looked at Keen 5's tiles, is zoomed in 200%, and is obviously under construction. The yellow lines highlight the top row and left-most column of pixels of every 16 px tile.
Pretty much everything else you might need can be found at Keen: Modding.
